GameSpy: Were there any challenges in making Soulcalibur for XBLA, such as porting the controls? Robert Johnson, Producer: When we started on the project, we were set on not wanting to make changes to the original. I think Soulcalibur works very well with the standard controller but there is really no substitute for a joystick when it comes to fighting games. GameSpy: We've heard that the game's graphics have been boosted a bit. Are they simply higher-res, or have the visuals been redone from the ground up? Johnson: The visuals were not reproduced from the ground up. But we did add filtering textures to improve the original graphics. GameSpy: Will the version of Soulcalibur on XBLA be the Japanese or American version? Johnson: Actually neither. It was based off the original European release. GameSpy: Will you need to unlock some of the characters, or will they be available from the first time you boot it up? Johnson: We wanted to give the fans of the series a treat so we left all of the hidden content unlocked. All the characters, alternative costumes and features are available from the start. GameSpy: Will we be seeing any new characters that weren't in the original game? Johnson: This iteration of Soulcalibur was designed to be a bonus for all the fans who craved the original. We also wanted to introduce the series to those who've only heard just how great the game is but never had the opportunity to play it. We didn't add any new content to this version, but remember on July 29th we are releasing Soulcalibur IV, which has a ton of new characters, features and online play. GameSpy: Is there a move list for those unfortunate souls that never played Soulcalibur? Johnson: Soulcalibur was WAY ahead of its time against other titles in the fighting genre. Built into the game is a full move list which can be viewed in almost every mode of play. In addition to this, the practice mode lets you master these moves and watch as the character AI perform them as reference. GameSpy: What game modes can we expect? Are there any new ones? Johnson: In order to fit within the XBLA file size limits, we did not add any new modes of play. However much like the title's original release, you can find modes such as Team Battle, Survival, Time Attack, Arcade, Vs. Mode (local play), Museum, and more. GameSpy: Does the game support online play over Xbox Live? Johnson: No, the game does not support online play. We could have thrown in something and supported the feature but it would have never been up to the quality level of the original game because the original wasn't designed with this in mind. Online fighting games are a very tricky beast. They are so timing-specific that even a fraction of a second of lag could mean the difference between a match. We believe that online play is not something that should be taken lightly. The last thing fans want is their impression of this awesome fighting game tarnished by the limitations of adding online to a title that was never designed for that feature. That being said, we have Soulcalibur IV coming out on July 29th which was designed with online play in mind. Now this doesn't mean we have given up entirely on the possibility of online for Soulcalibur Xbox Live Arcade. You never know what advancements can be made, given a little time. If this ever happens, it will be at a time when we are sure nothing will be sacrificed in terms of quality. GameSpy: We've heard a bit about the Museum. Could you explain what this is, and what we can expect to see when we enter it? Johnson: For those who have played the original game they might remember this feature, but for those who are picking it up for the first time they're in for a treat. The Museum mode has four features within it. The first is a Picture Gallery which allows you to view character artwork, original marketing materials, fan art, etc. The second is a Battle Theatre which lets you pick any two characters and watch the character AI battle. This is great for beginners to study the CPU's fighting style. Third is an Exhibition Theatre which allows users to choose a character and watch them demonstrate all of their movies much like something you would see at a martial arts tournament. Last but not least, there's a Character Profile section which gives an in-depth look at each character including their story, history, and endings. For fans of Soulcalibur who no longer have access to the original version, this is truly a treat. Best of all everything is all unlocked from the start! GameSpy: Tell us about some of the achievements you can unlock. What's the toughest one? Johnson: There are a couple tough achievements but if I had to pick the hardest for myself it would have to be "Noble Soul." To unlock this achievement you have to beat the game on the "Ultra Hard" difficulty setting without losing a round. That being said, my favorite achievement is the "Guardian," but you will have to wait to find out what that is. GameSpy: Will Soulcalibur support the use of a Hori stick or some other arcade fighting stick? Johnson: Soulcalibur will work on all the official Microsoft-licensed controllers. GameSpy: How many Microsoft points will we need to drop on Soulcalibur? Johnson: You'll need 800 points. It's such a great value for the greatest fighting game of all time! GameSpy: While we're sure you're adept with all of the characters, you must have some favorites. Who are your fighters of choice? Johnson: I love using Ivy because of her long reach. GameSpy: Finally, does the Soul still burn? Johnson: Of course it does!
There are 12 achievements with a total of 200 points.
