Soul Calibur Universe - News Archive - September 2005

September 2005

September 30th, 2005

I was right, it WAS Olcadan, and not Orcadan.

Big updates coming soon.

September 26th, 2005

There may be some downtime tomorrow and on the 30th. Don't panic if this happens. =)

September 25th, 2005

As Namco calls them, "Stage 360s" are available now! Go to the stages page and click on the images to a panorama! Thank you Ryvis. In addition to this, three new stages have been added (also coming with a panorama). Some small fixes were made as well.

September 21st, 2005

Videos are back again. I upgraded my hosting.

Revamped the CAS Page, adding new info and rearranging things.

Also, Soul Calibur's image gallery was updated (again) with like 50 ENDING images! Check them out!

September 16th, 2005

Tokyo Game Show has brought in some pretty nifty stuff, such as a new MGS4 trailor, The Revolution controller, and of course SC3 information. A brand new 7+ minute long video.. I've never been more hyped for a game in my life!

Check it out.

September 14th, 2005

Soul Calibur's image gallery was updated with like 50 fanart images! Check them out!

HUGE UPDATE!

“Aliquis” Interview and Videos (Part 1 - September 08, 2005)

This is new some information and videos released by an anonymous source. “Aliquis” is just a code-name, and is not at all related to the interviewee (it simply means "someone" in Latin). The interviewee is not an employee of Namco in any way. Note that all of this information is subject to change; only questions that are pretty solid were asked (as in they probably won’t be changed before the game is released). Leaked information can only really hurt Namco in one way: if it gets people hyped up about something that won’t make it to the final cut of the game. These questions were carefully chosen as to not release information that is likely to change. All of this information is pretty solid and probably won’t change; so all it will do is get everyone more hyped up about the game. Note that the replies are not exact quotes; they have been modified in structure, but not in meaning.

These are a collection of short videos that show off some new moves and characters' 2P outfits. Sorry about the lack of sound.

-=About Characters=-

Are Zasalamel and Abyss almost the same character?
Abyss is actually quite different from Zasalamel, and he isn't some super-strong character. However, he also isn’t the last boss...the “real” last boss isn’t playable.

Who’s this person?
Orcadan's 2P costume.

Namco said every character from the Soul series (except Necrid and the guest characters) will be in the game...but what about Inferno, Charade, Seung Han Myong, and Edge Master?
Right now none of them are in the game, but they might still make the final cut.

It has been said that Kilik's tribute stance (QCB/214, where he does the splits) is now gone, and has been replaced by a new stance. What is the new stance like?
Kinda leans back, turns his back, and places his bo staff over his shoulder pointing down. It is a temporary stance (like his QCF/236 Monument stance), and is Kilik’s only new stance.

Does Seong Mi-na play like Soul Calibur II Kilik now, or does she play like she always has?
Like she always has.

Does Amy have Raphael's moveset?
No, she doesn't. She seems to have shorter range. Odds are she has a CAS moveset, but I'm not sure.

-=Modes=-

What is this Soul Arena mode?
It is the mode with the mini-modes.

What is World Competition Mode exactly?
A basic ladder competition mode. It is only single player.

What about the Extra weapons (like in Soul Calibur II); are those still in?
Yep.

How is Practice mode now?
It is much more complete than Soul Calibur II’s practice mode...however, I can’t comment on anything specific (many things can change before the final release).

-=In-Depth Character Changes=-

Kilik changes...
Lost 6AA, B+K
6AAA is new
6AAB is new
66A,A is a new high, low, strong
4K,B high is a new low into a low poke
44B pokes in eye
4B unblockable is gone
66B can't be charged anymore (but goes into attack throw on counter-hit)
WS+K is gone.
Note that all move additions and changes (along with the removing of moves) are subject to change.

Taki changes...
Unblockable cancel is gone
66A is now her old PO A+K
A+B is now A+K
You can control which way she faces after A+K by holding it
B,K is now a natural combo
22AA,A is gone
66B is new (can A follow up on hit)
New A+B from PO
Can do three ground punches in a row
New throw from BT PO
A+K is an air throw if it connects with opponent in air
A+K from PO is backflip
She can Wind Roll backwards after rolling forward
Note that all move additions and changes (along with the removing of moves) are subject to change.

-=Other=-

What's up with Tira's moods? It was seen briefly in some videos (changing from Fine to gloomy, then back)...
It has nothing to do with Tira; can be done with any character. It is a feature in one of the single player modes.

Step-G...what's the news about that? Last we knew it was still in. O_O
It’s still in. But now when you step if you're hit while stepping then it counts as a counter-hit. So you can't block low if you are using Step-G. This is still subject to change, however.

Do bonus characters have original voices? Or do they use the CAS (or no) voices?
They have their own voices. Soul Calibur III in general has A LOT of dialogue. Every character has over 150 quotes!

What about getting up off the ground?
It is a lot slower now, so hitting people while they are on the ground is easier. Makes falling down much more punishable.

Character costumes and color palettes...
Every character at this point as four costumes. 1P, 2P, C1, and C2. C1 and C2 are the color palettes. C1 is the color palette for 1P, and C2 for 2P. Every costume has three colors that can be changed, which affect different things per character. For instance, Yoshimitsu's P1/C1 three color changes are a bit of clothing on the chest, different clothing on the chest, and waist coat. The things that change are different per character/costume.

Thanks to Annon and his source for this update!!

EB Games - Nightmare, Tira, and Zasalamel shirt
GameStop - Ivy, Kilik, Astaroth
GameCrazy - Mitsurugi, Setsuka

Also, in the November issue of Official Playstation Magazine, they have a SC3 demo disc. Magazine companies lie about the date of thier magazine, so you could aquire this demo disk early in October. Is it worth the $10? You decide:

Kilik's Tales of Souls is unlocked, along with VS mode with Mitsu and Tira as playable characters. Also, some CAS functions are available. (Not the whole thing though)

September 2nd, 2005

SoulArchive update, video about CotS mode is on there along with a Kimawhatchamacallit Watcher interview. Check it out!

Alright, time to make a lot of sense out of the crazy update yesterday.

Here's all the information presented in a nice manner: (Written by AnnonKaiesZi, information gotten by "Aliquis")

ONCE AGAIN, SPOILERS!

(psst, all the images were taken down, but now they are here.)

Starting roster:

Zasalamel
Cassandra
Taki
Mitsurugi
Siegfried
Nightmare
Ivy
Astaroth
Voldo
Tira
Kilik
Xianghua
Maxi
Seong Mi-na
Yun-seong
Talim
Raphael
Setsuka

Characters that need to be unlocked:

Yoshimitsu
Rock
Sophitia
Orcadan
Cervantes
Lizardman
Abyss

Information about some of the new characters:

Abyss is the demon version of Zasalamel, and is the “boss” character of the game. He has most of Zasalmel’s moves, plus some extras (kind of like Cervantes and Soul Edge in Soul Edge/Blade). He has a gatling attack that hits multiple times just outside of weapon range. He also has a charge-up that let's him shoot a fireball across the screen; nasty, but you can see it coming from miles away.

Orcadan is the random character (like Charade). He’s a warrior who was cursed and turned into an owl man when fighting the gods. His alternate costume loses doesn’t have the owl head. He only mimics regular characters, not bonus or CAS characters.

Lizardman now has an axe. He seems to play quite different from Cassandra and Sophitia.

Rock now has a mace.

“Bonus” Characters:

There are also bonus characters that can be selected from the character select screen (the box with the exclamation point). These are pre-generated CAS characters. They don’t have their own movesets (they use the CAS movesets), but they do have unique clothing/equipment that other CAS characters can’t use. You can’t edit bonus characters.

Some of the bonus characters include Hwang, Amy, Li Long, Arthur, Revenant, Greed, Miser, Valeria, Hualin, Lynette, Abelia, Luna, Girardot, Chester, Demuth, Aurelia, and Strife.

Information about some of the “bonus” characters:

Hwang was from Soul Edge (a.k.a. Soul Blade) and Soul Calibur. He was, in a sense, replaced by Yun-seong.

Amy is the little girl in Raphael’s story. She also uses rapier like Raphael.

Li Long was in Soul Edge (a.k.a. Soul Blade), and it is very controversial whether he is truly dead or not. In a sense, he was replaced by Maxi. In Soul Calibur III he will be using dual nunchuku and he now has a back-turned stance.

Arthur was a character in some of the versions of Soul Calibur that replaced Mitsurugi. He had the exact same moveset as Mitsurugi. You see, in some countries samurai were banned, so they had to get rid of Mitsurugi and replace him with someone else; these countries had the Arthur version of the game. Arthur seems to use a different sword in Soul Calibur III, however, while he just used a katana in Soul Calibur.

Most of the other bonus characters are from Chronicles of the Sword mode, and also from Tales of Souls mode.

Other Information:

*All characters have two color pallets that you can edit.
*Some CAS characters use dual blades and foot blades.
*There is at least one stage for each of the 25 characters. Cassandra has the burning mansion, Yun-seong has the Egypt stage, Lizardman has the Silk Road ruins, Rock has the coliseum stage, Cervantes has the boat stage, and Sophitia has a shrine.
*Ivy doesn’t seem to have her long-range stab anymore (6B+K?)
*Yoshimitsu still has the flag.
*It seems that Nightmare or Siegfried is the sub-boss.
*Siegfried plays like Nightmare from Soul Calibur II, while Nightmare gets the change. Seong Mi-na plays like she did in Soul Calibur II, while Kilik is changed.
*There is a random character select box (purple box with the question mark), a randomly generate CAS character box (green box with the question mark), a memory card 1 CAS select (bottom left), and a memory card 2 CAS select (bottom right).
*The Barbarian class with a great sword has different stances but some Siegfried moves, including Earth Divide. The Thief class has some really cool throws and some moves taken from Talim.
*You start with six CAS classes (you can unlock four more), each with one weapon style. You can unlock more weapon styles by playing through Chronicles of the Sword mode. You choose your weapon before each battle.
*There is an option for Japanese voices (with English subtitles) or English voices. Everyone speaks the same language depending on which options (Japanese or English) you have it set to; characters don’t speak their native languages.
*Cassandra and Sophitia’s moves are much more different now. While they do the same basic thing, they look completely different and probably have different properties.

From Here. Thank you [Art]ilust and Siegfried.

SPOILER WARNING! DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU WISH TO KEEP SOME THINGS SECRET ABOUT THE GAME!

"Sophitia, Rock, Lizardman, Yoshimitsu and Cervantes returning.

Abyss (demon version of Zasa) is the boss, Nightie or Siegfried is the sub-boss.

The random character is Olcadan, a warrior who was cursed into an owl man when fighting the gods. His alt costume loses the owl head.

There's a box on the select screen for bonus characters from the RTS mode, as well as returning Arthur (the Mitsurugi copy), Li Long, Hwang and Amy (Raphael's ward, fighting with rapier like him).

The remaining four boxes are for random select, randomly generated characters, mem card 1 characters and mem card 2 characters. There may still be more bonus characters to unlock (Bangoo is stated to be training in the US, might be him) but I can't play the RTS modes or the coin collect modes so I'm not sure. BTW, RTS mode has on-map battles with small energy bars, no regular SC battles."

Hwang's a bonus character, as are Amy, Li Long, Arthur, Revenant, Greed, Miser, Valeria, Hualin, Lynette, Abelia, Luna, Girardot, Chester, Demuth, Aurelia, Strife and whoever else is still hiding in there.

So, 25 story characters, 18+ bonus characters and 10+10 custom characters, plus completely random option.

""2.who the hell is revenant?"
Another bonus character like Hwang. You fight him some times in story mode.

"3.in the li-long vs. li-long versus pic, is that dual chucks i see???? one in his hands and 1 on his side?"
He has one on his costume. Since he's a "custom" character he's using the style you'll be giving to your own characters.

"4.Arthurs weapon seems different to mitsu's. different fighting style or am i being silly now?"
Same here.

"Cassy had 3 different costumes."
No? There are two costumes, and two palette swaps (which you can edit).

"Is Abyss exactly like Zasalamel?"
As much as Soul Edge is exactly like Cervantes. I've not played with either of them nearly enough to know, but he does the same basic moves plus some magic mumbo-jumbo.

"What is thh mimic character like? Does he change styles each match or on the fly?"
Each round.

"is Amy a different skin of Ralph? Same for Li Long and Arthur."
All bonus characters use custom character movelists. Some of the others use dual blades and foot blades, which are really cool BTW.

"-how many stages are there? Thers like 4 new stages in the new screens alone."
Seems to be 30, at least there's one for each character (25). Cass is in the burning mansion, Yun is in Egypt, Liz is in the Silk Road ruins, Rock is in colosseum, Cervantes is on the boat (looking AWESOME!), Sophitia has the shrine.

"-does that "Bonus Character"
Icon mean those 5+ characters in CoTS are selectable in versus?" Yes.

"-Care to elaborate of some of the new moves? .. Ivy in specific."
Can't really, I've just mashed my way through some story modes and spent hours today grabbing pics. Ivy doesn't seem to have her long-range stab (f+BK?).

"-how about lizzy, is he completely different from Cassy and Sophie?"
Seems quite different.

"My main question is Who needs to be unlocked?"
Everyone we didn't know about yesterday. All up to Mi-Na etc are unlocked from start.

"and since there are no more clones who changed cass or sophie?"
Can't tell."
